INTRODUCTION

Swayamshree Micro Credit Services (SMCS), one of the leading not-for-profit Micro Finance Institutions (MFI) in Odisha , provided flexible and sustainable financial services and products to the poor in order to improve their means of livelihood, increase incomes, and develop their assets and capacities, and thereby promote their economic and social well-being (Refer to Exhibit I for top ten MFIs in India). The organization was supported by the Center for Youth and Social Development (CYSD), an NGO involved in community development programs in rural Odisha. The vision of SMCS was to create “a poverty-free inclusive society, where the poor have yet another chance for self-renewal and growth with opportunities to live fulfilling and meaningful lives by overcoming their vulnerabilities and releasing their productive potential, thereby linking with mainstream through participation in the collective growth.”..
